Every cloudy day holds the promise of sunshine. But the sun does not always break
through. Mild depression occurs when we
go for several days without sunshine. If
the sun is hidden for too long, SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) occurs. Don’t you just love those psychological
terms? In a spiritual sense, some people
are sad, not SAD, because they have not experienced love, friendship,
acceptance, and other social “sunshine,” in a long period, and sometimes never.
Why am I bringing this up?
Last night, while researching I came across a website titled, “The Faces
of Suicide" (the pics for this blog did not come from that site). I stopped researching to
look at each face. The pain in their
eyes, in spite of some smiling faces, was evident. I could see the disparate longing for love
and acceptance in some of them. Additionally,
some of the faces seemed to be etched with the resignation that they were too
ugly, too weird, or otherwise too repulsive for anyone to love.
I was overwhelmed with compassion. I thought, “I wish I had met them all, had
the opportunity to love them and tell them about God who loves them.” If God were to give me arms long enough, I
would wrap them around the entire group.
There was not one of those people that we would not have
immediately brightened, became friendly, and reached out to, if as a baby they
were cradled in our arms. I prayed, “Father
God, never let me ever look at another person and judge them as socially
unacceptable to me. Fill my heart with more
love and I will not stingily withhold it from them.”
I love you. If there
hasn’t been any “sunshine” in your life in a while, please know that you are
beautiful to God. You do not have to
accept Hollywood’s standard of beauty or social adeptness. Just be yourself. Most importantly, be the “sunshine” in
someone else’s life and you will make your own “sunshine.” As long as you are a child of God, you are a
potential maker of “sunshine.”
If you are not a child of God, there is absolutely nothing preventing
you other than your willingness to be one.
Satan will make you sad, and convince you to destroy yourself. He will even offer to do the job for you in
numerous ways. Please do not listen to
him. God will fill you with so much joy
and peace that you will want to live to obey Him and bless other people. Saved or not saved, you are not
worthless. Christ paid your sin debt
with His life—that makes you worth a lot.
Instead of “cashing out,” please try “cashing in” by
surrendering to God. I’m not just talking about church attendance, which can be
disappointing in the wrong church. I’m
talking about an experience between you and God. I’m talking about love, acceptance, and forgiveness.
God, through the Spirit of Christ Who will
come to dwell inside of you. He will
cast out all your sorrow and sense of rejection, and fill you with hope and joy. Please do not make a terminal decision, but
instead make an eternal one to have abundant life. I love you.
